As March arrives, we’re all looking forward to putting our winter boots away and slipping into lighter footwear. But be careful! It’s essential to take a few steps to ensure your boots are properly prepared for storage so they stay in great condition until the cold returns (because yes… it will 🤣). Martino winter boots are built to last. Here are the key steps to follow to take good care of them and keep them looking and feeling great for years to come.

Step 1/5
REMOVE SALT STAINS
Calcium and salt are leather’s biggest enemies in winter. They penetrate the material, dry it out, and can leave permanent marks. To remove them effectively, use a solution made of equal parts water and vinegar. Apply it with a soft, slightly damp cloth, gently cleaning the entire surface without scrubbing aggressively.
ALLOW THE LEATHER TO DRY PROPERLY
Leather is a living material that reacts strongly to heat. After each step, it’s crucial to let your boots dry completely at room temperature. Avoid direct heat sources such as radiators or heated floors, as they can stiffen the leather and cause cracks. Natural drying helps preserve the leather’s flexibility and integrity.
Step 2/5
CLEAN
Once salt deposits are removed, clean the leather thoroughly using a suitable product. This step eliminates invisible residues and prepares the leather to absorb moisturizing care. Proper cleaning ensures better product absorption and prevents impurities from being trapped in the material, which could accelerate wear over time.
THE RIGHT PRODUCT
We recommend the Martino leather cleaner spray. Gentle yet effective, it removes dirt and stains without damaging the leather. Spray from about 30 cm away and apply generously. Gently rub with a soft, dry cloth to distribute the product evenly, then let dry completely. Not recommended for suede or nubuck.

Step 3/5
MOISTURIZE
Leather is a natural material that needs nourishment. During winter, due to temperature changes and repeated cleaning, it loses some of its natural oils. Applying a leather conditioner or grease helps restore this barrier, maintain flexibility, and prevent the leather from drying out or cracking. This step directly contributes to both durability and comfort.
THE RIGHT PRODUCT
We recommend Martino mink oil conditioner. It revitalizes, softens, and waterproofs all types of leather, both genuine and synthetic. Regular use helps prevent salt stains by creating a protective barrier against abrasives. Apply in circular motions using a soft, dry cloth until fully absorbed. Let dry completely.

PROTECT OR LET THE LEATHER BREATHE?
There are two schools of thought when it comes to protecting leather before storage. Some apply a protective spray to create an additional barrier. At Martino, we take a different approach: letting the leather breathe naturally for several months.
Applying a protector before storing can trap residues and limit the leather’s ability to breathe. It’s best to apply protection when you take your boots out again in the fall, as you prepare them for a new season.
Step 4/5
MAINTAIN SHAPE
Before storing your boots, it’s essential to fill them. Use shoe trees, newspaper, or dry cloths. This helps maintain the boot’s structure, prevent permanent creases, and absorb any remaining moisture. Properly supported boots will retain their comfort and original look longer.
Step 5/5
STORE PROPERLY
Storage conditions are often overlooked, but they play a major role. Store your boots in a cotton bag, never plastic, to allow the leather to breathe. Choose a dark, dry place with a stable temperature. Temperature fluctuations and humidity can damage the leather structure and lead to mold or deformation.
Properly storing your boots helps extend their lifespan and preserve their quality season after season. At Martino, every pair is designed to last for years, and with the right care, they’ll stay just as beautiful and comfortable as day one.
