How to clean your boots during winter

Comment nettoyer vos bottes d'hiver

During the winter, your boots are put through the wringer: snow, salt, moisture… they take it all. Take note! A few simple steps can make all the difference in preserving their appearance, comfort, and durability day in and day out. Martino winter boots are built to last, but proper care during the season is essential to getting the most out of them year after year. Here are the key steps for taking care of them all winter long.

Step 1/4
REMOVE CALCIUM

Start by cleaning the outer surface with a homemade solution of water and vinegar (one part to one part) to remove dirt, salt, and calcium deposits. Use a soft, slightly damp cloth and rinse it frequently to avoid spreading dirt across the entire leather surface. Do not use a stiff brush, as this could damage the boot.

Note: This step should be performed regularly when there is salt on the boots to ensure the leather stays hydrated and healthy.

*Allow the leather to dry naturally between each step, away from any heat source.

Step 2/4
CLEAN

To clean your boots even more thoroughly, follow up with a care product specifically formulated to clean all types of natural leather. This step is essential for the longevity of your boots and can be done as often as needed. It is important to always let the leather air dry completely before moving on to the next step.

THE RIGHT PRODUCT
We recommend Martino’s leather spray cleaner. With its gentle yet powerful cleaning action, it effectively removes dirt and stains without damaging the leather. Spray the cleaner from about 30 centimeters away from the boot and apply it generously. Gently rub with a soft, dry cloth to spread the product evenly, then let it dry completely. Not recommended for suede or nubuck.

Step 3/4
MOISTURIZE

Just like skin, leather needs moisture to prevent it from drying out. Repeatedly applying a descaler and a cleaner (steps 1 and 2) can damage the leather’s protective layer. It is therefore important to apply the right protective treatment after each cleaning to rehydrate the leather. Natural oil is ideal for refreshing the leather, restoring its water resistance, and extending its lifespan. Please note that applying a moisturizer may temporarily change the color and appearance of the leather: it may darken slightly and become shinier.

*Allow the leather to dry naturally between each step, away from any heat source.

THE RIGHT PRODUCT
We recommend Martino's Dubbin hydrates. It revitalizes, softens, and waterproofs all types of leather, whether genuine or synthetic. Regular use helps prevent water spots by creating a barrier against abrasives. Apply the grease in circular motions using a soft, dry cloth until it is fully absorbed. Allow to dry completely.

Step 4/4
PROTECT

All that’s left is to protect them for the tough conditions they’ll face. Using a protectant is the perfect way to complete your care routine. It forms an invisible shield against splashes of snow, calcium, and slush, and prevents stains from setting in.

*Allow the leather to dry naturally between each step, away from any heat source.

THE RIGHT PRODUCT
We recommend Martino’s leather spray protector. This is the finishing touch to your care routine and seals the leather’s surface to prevent dirt from damaging it. Spray the protector from about 30 centimeters away from the boot and apply it generously. Let it dry completely.
